Eucalyptus essential oil is the generic name for the oil distilled from the Eucalyptus leaf. Eucalyptus oil has a history of wide application, such as pharmaceutical, antiseptic, repellent, flavoring, perfume and industrial uses.
The leaves of some species of eucalyptus are steam distilled to extract eucalyptus oil.
Botanical name: Eucalyptus globulus, Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Sieb.
Plant part: Wood and leaves
Extraction method: Steam distilled
DESCRIPTION AND USES:
1.Drug and antiseptic
Cineole oil is used as a component in pharmaceutical preparations to relieve symptoms of flu and colds, in products such as cough drops, lozenges, ointments and inhalants. Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial effects on pathogenic bacteria in the respiratory tract. Inhaled eucalyptus oil vapor is a decongestant and treatment for bronchitis. Cineole controls airway mucus hypersecretion and asthma via inhibition of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Sugar oil also stimulates the immune system response through effects on the phagocytic capacity of human monocyte-derived macrophages.
Eucalyptus oil also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities.
Eucalyptus oil is also used in personal care products for antimicrobial properties in dental care and soaps. It can also be applied to wounds to prevent infection.
2.Repellent and biopesticide
Eucalyptus oil made from Cineole is used as an insect repellent and biopesticide. In the United States, eucalyptus oil was first registered in 1948 as an insecticide and acaricide.
Aroma
Eucalyptus oil is used in flavoring. Cineole eucalyptus oil is used as a flavoring agent at low levels (0.002%) in various products, including baked goods, confectionery, meat products, and metals. Eucalyptus oil has antimicrobial activity against a wide range of foodborne human pathogens and food spoilage microorganisms. Non-cineolated peppermint gum, strawberry gum, and andlemon iron clay are also used as flavoring.
Scent
Eucalyptus oil is also used as a fragrance component to impart a fresh, clean aroma in soaps, detergents, lotions and perfumes.
Industrial
Research shows that cineole eucalyptus oil (5% blend) prevents the separation problem with ethanol and fuel blends. Eucalyptus oil also has a respectable octane rating and can be used as a fuel in its own right. However, production costs are currently too high for oil to be economically viable as a fuel.
