The origins of the national fish canning industry date back to the 19th century, when the fishing and canning industries were grouped together in Vila Real de Santo António. It was here that tuna fishing was concentrated for over a century, resulting in canned fish that fed thousands of people around the world. As the industry grew, so did demand, and little by little, canned tuna became a staple food for many families. The growth was such that by the end of the 20th century, the Algarve coast began to show signs of overexploitation. At the same time, tuna migration routes were beginning to change.
